This seminar is designed for educators who have attended a JASON orientation or have used JASON before. Entrepreneurial Challenges: Design & Pitch Challenges

You have great ideas for how to make the world a better place. The Design & Pitch Challenges in STEM are your chance to start turning those ideas into a reality. In these Challenges, you will need to think like an entrepreneur as you create real solutions to messy STEM problems. You will need to use your knowledge and expertise in creative ways to invent new products that meet customers’ needs. You will need to be able to recognize when you need to learn something new about STEM, your customers, or the situation, and be willing to work to learn it. But entrepreneurship is not just about building great solutions. At the end of each Challenge, you will need to convince a panel of judges that your solution is worth funding in a process called “making a pitch.” Be clear and be convincing. The world needs your ideas and solutions!

Making Problem-Based Learning Relevant to Current Events: Grades 4-12

JASON offers a multitude of problem-based learning opportunities for students to connect with community and apply design thinking principles in a variety of STEM fields. Explore how to leverage JASON’s Field Assignments and Design & Pitch Series to engage students in meaningful, real-world challenges. We’ll highlight Operation Lifeline – where students design solutions to keeping critical medicines cold and delivering them in times of disaster – and relate this to current challenges parts of the world face with vaccine distribution during the COVID -19 pandemic.

Join us for 30 minutes each Thursday on a different JASON topic. STEM comes alive with problem-based and project-based learning in JASON. Students develop both soft and hard skills while connecting to real-world challenges and engaging in the process of designing solutions. Explore the differences between problem-based and project-based learning experiences, learn where to find these in JASON and how to leverage with students!

Audacity is a free, open-source, cross-platform audio software used in JASON’s World of Waves curriculum. Educators will learn to leverage this software with JASON’s lessons to help students explore patterns and relationships between frequency and pitch, and visualize parts of a wave. (Note: Audacity does not work on Chromebooks, but methods for creating assets on other devices using Audacity for use in a chromebook setting are addressed.)
