The Rigamajig is a large-scale building kit used for hands-on free play and learning. This collection of wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope allows children to follow their curiosity through play. There are no right or wrong answers. Children create contraptions to convey buckets, three legged spaceships, elephant movie projectors hiding under robot monsters, and all-purpose “Rigamajigs”. The act of playing and building is the goal, not the finished product.
In the European model of adventure playgrounds, children form communities around collaboratively built wooden structures and child-directed play. Inspired by this model, the Rigamajig motivates playful, cooperative learning. Children make friends and share resources; “Trade you this pulley for that canvas!”, “Wanna help me make a fort?”, “Is that a giraffe?”, and “Hey, will you hold this while I connect it?” are common greetings between children. And then, when playtime is over, they either take their Rigamajig contraption apart, or leave it for other children to re-imagine.
Engaging the inquisitive mind and creative spirit, Rigamajig empowers children to think three dimensionally, building things larger than themselves. Valuable lessons are learned, exercise is had, and imagination is invigorated.
Use Rigamajig as the “materials kit” for completing any of JASON’s open-ended hands-on activity challenges!
