Civilization Undercover History: Civilization Undercover (Printable activity)
This interdisciplinary connection article describes the ancient city of Akrotiri, which was buried under volcanic rock during a volcanic eruption about four thousand years ago. The article discusses if and how ancient people knew about the dangers of living near volcanoes. Students are asked to research the geologic history of an active volcano and use technology to search for evidence of past eruptions.
Flower Garden Banks Geology: Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (Printable activity)
Volcanoes, salt domes, lakes, and rivers…all at the bottom of the ocean! Though it sounds incredible, if you look underwater in the Flower Garden Banks, this is what you'll actually find. Since the time of Pangea, landmasses have been moving and geological features of the Earth have been changing forming underwater salt lakes, mud volcanoes, and huge salt domes. These unique formations are the home of pioneering species that have established new communities on the once barren sea floor. Explorers like Dr. Bob Ballard study these geologic formations to understand how to preserve these natural settings.
Hawaii Culture: Hawaii (Printable activity)
Aloha! What does this word make you think of? Exotic islands? Hula dancers? Leis made of colorful shells and fragrant flowers? All these and more are the topic of this article. Learn about the culture of the islands, and how elements of this culture have been passed down over time. Also learn a few new Hawaiian words, and some interesting features about the Hawaiian alphabet! Then, think about how elements of your own culture are passed down. Can you find any similarities?
Mission 2 Resilient Planet - Mission 2: Survivors (JASON curriculum)
Available inside the JASON Mission Center, Digital Labs and games allow students to explore the work of Operation: Tetconic Fury through an exciting gaming environment. Learn more about Landform Detectives, JASON's Digital Lab exploring the formation and location of Earth's geologic features.
