Karina is a student of many interests. From playing the flute in the high school band to playing on the junior varsity tennis team, this Southern Californian keeps herself busy. She also participates in a program called Junior Statesmen of America and is part of the drama program at her high school. Although one could conclude her interests lie outside of science, once you meet and talk with Karina her passion for science is immediately evident.

Karina has been interested in science since she was very young. Her parents recall her always asking questions that involved science. Recently, she has become very interested in biotechnology. She wonders what life will be like in the future as the science of genetics advances. What kinds of food and health options will be available to humanity?
