EcoDefenders Alien invaders do exist! But they don’t come from other planets; these aliens are planetary locals. Invasive species from one part of the world sometimes move some place new, establish an ecological niche, and disrupt the ecosystem. When this happens, the consequences can be dire… Using your understanding of ecological niches, adaptations, trophic levels, and competition, you will analyze how invasive species can enter an ecosystem and take over! |

Will your invasive species devastate an ecosystem or is it doomed to extinction?
Play EcoDefenders!
EcoDefenders is an interactive game that explores the science of invasive species. Use your knowledge of ecosystems, adaptations, and competition to design a simulation of an invasive species. When invading species occupy the same ecological niche as a native species, they can wreak havoc on an ecosystem. Select one of three ecosystems and watch the survival of the fittest play out on your screen!

Alien invaders do exist! But they don’t come from other planets; these aliens are planetary locals. Invasive species from one part of the world sometimes move some place new, establish an ecological niche, and disrupt the ecosystem. When this happens, the consequences can be dire…

In EcoDefenders, you will run a simulation by designing an invasive species and setting it loose in an imaginary ecosystem. Using your understanding of ecological niches, adaptations, trophic levels, and competition, you will analyze how invasive species can enter an ecosystem and take over.

JASON Host Researcher Russell Cuhel wants to learn more about how invasive species can disrupt an ecosystem. However, this isn’t something we can do safely with an experiment.

Can you help Russell understand this harmful phenomenon? Design your own “alien” and become an EcoDefender. The most successful designers will find themselves on the JASON Leaderboard!
