Culture: Appalachia Appalachia is a mountainous region in the United States containing parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. Inhabitants of Appalachia have a distinct dialect, called Appalachian English. This dialect evolved over many years, as settlers moved to the region and communicated with one another. In addition to their distinctive way of talking, they also cultivated a distinct style of music. Whether you realize it or not, you have a dialect, too! What words, pronunciations or sayings do you use that are part of your local dialect? |
