Math is Hiyam's favorite subject and she feels high-level math skills can help one develop problem solving skills in other areas, and also help solve many of the world's problems. Her teacher says, "She has shown to be truly concerned about the problems we face today and is capable of coming up with solutions and putting them into practice." She also likes business-related activities and her team won the Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge. Hiyam's concern for the welfare of our planet is evident in her interactions with scientists. She is adventurous, willing to try new things and has a compassionate, gentle spirit.
Hiyam is willing to try any adventure that comes her way, including whitewater rafting and roller coasters. This sense of adventure served her well as a National Student Argonaut. Hiyam has a sense of universal grace that is evident in her interactions with peers and adults alike. She is inquisitive and not afraid to be involved in solving the world's challenges.
In Her Own Words
On Heroes and Inspiration
Heroes are those who care for society and seek happiness for those who do not have it. Also, those who personally know someone and help them to be a better person. My hero can be defined as someone who is there when you need help, who sacrifices part of his or her life in order to make people feel safe and happy. God and my parents are my heroes because they give me everything I need and are my consolation and advice.
My parents have always worked hard to help give me the education I need, so each time I get a good grade or a first place I thank them because without their efforts I wouldn't have gotten those things. They are my inspiration when I am very tired or stressed because if I were to put my effort and their effort in a balance, I would need five times more weight on my side to be like them.
On Doing Experiments at National Energy Technology Labs
We went to NETL, we did great experiments; the first one was with magnets. We put iron filings to show the magnetic field and forces between them. Poles, forces, attractions, etc.., we had a great time. The second experiment was about electricity, can we actually generate it? Yes! If we pass a magnet through coils of wire, the attraction of electrons will make them move producing an electric current. The more wire and more magnets, more electricity you generate.
On Why It's Important to Work as a Team to Help Earth
Each time you learn something new, you discover you know almost nothing at all. There is so much still to be discovered, too many mysteries for a single person, that's why we all need to put our efforts together and try to develop new ways to make Earth a better place. We need to maintain a certain balance between human necessities and nature. That way life can be much better and we can develop and grow.
On Cool Things You Can Learn About Energy as an Argo
Today I learned:
- A pellet of uranium can produce as much energy as 1 ton of coal, 17, 000 ft3 of natural gas, and 149 gallons of oil.
- Mexico has two nuclear power plants.
- Australia produces lots of uranium.
- Coal has many advantages such as being easily available, plenty of it, and cheap, but has disadvantages such as producing CO2.
- I saw momentum at the baseball game: action and reaction (Newton's third law).
What JASON Means to Me
I'm having a very good time and an experience I won't forget in my life. Everybody is friendly and we trust in each other. We are a super team; this has been the best experience in my life. JASON was a life changing experience because I met new people who became my best friends. I had the opportunity to work with scientists at the labs. This project made me look at science as the opportunity to have fun. Science is everywhere! I learned a lot of things like working in teams, the current energy situation in the world, new inventions that can save energy and reduce the prices to get it and other cool facts. I will really miss the people with whom I worked and all of the fun I had with them, but I know that someday in the future I will see them again and continue being the team we are now, a team eager to make the change, a team that is called JASON.
