While feeding in Stellwagen Bank, a North Atlantic right whale consumes about one million calories a day. That’s equal to about 4,000 single scoop ice cream cones. Instead of ice cream, the whale’s nutrition comes from consuming about 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) of plankton a day. In contrast, the average human adult needs about 2,000 calories and consumes on average 1–2 kg (2–4 lbs) per day.
