NASA satellites provide data to Brazillian and American scientists, like DeFries, to form the basis of an operational observation system that, in near real-time, identifies locations of new deforestation and can be used to quantify biomass losses. This system is helping the Brazillian government monitor the logging activities in the Amazon rain forest and to understand how, when, and what lands are used.
