Geology: Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary

Volcanoes, salt domes, lakes, and rivers…all at the bottom of the ocean! Though it sounds incredible, if you look underwater in the Flower Garden Banks, this is what you’ll actually find. Since the time of Pangea, landmasses have been moving and geological features of the Earth have been changing forming underwater salt lakes, mud volcanoes, and huge salt domes. These unique formations are the home of pioneering species that have established new communities on the once barren sea floor. Explorers like Dr. Bob Ballard study these geologic formations to understand how to preserve these natural settings.
