Animal Behavior

In this lab, students will have the opportunity to study the behavior of a variety of different animals.

As the ROV glides above the shallow bottom, its camera captures the behavior of many of the FGBNMS inhabitants. Some fish scatter at the approach of this alien craft. Others are more curious, and readily approach the unfamiliar intruder. Still others appear totally unaware of this craft.

Aboard the research ship, Bob Ballard watches as an assistant pilots the ROV. As it moves through the marine sanctuary, the remotely controlled craft transmits live images back to the ship. In the control room, these images are displayed on monitors in real time and are also recorded for later analysis. By studying these images, scientists learn more about the behavior and ecological role of the FGBNMS inhabitants.

In this activity, you will have the opportunity to study the behavior of a variety of different animals. You will move from station to station and carefully observe and explore the variety of specimens.

Materials

Lab Prep
Ant
  1. Prior to this lab period, inform your instructor of any allergies to animals you have.
  2. When you enter the laboratory, do not touch any of the stations. Wait for instructions from your instructor before beginning the lab.
  3. With your instructor, review student behaviors and procedures associated with proper care and handling of animals.
  4. Review the objectives and any procedures that are established for each station.
  5. Review the order in which you will move from station to station.
  6. Note the time that you will remain at a station.
  7. For each station, you will need to create one or more species cards. One side of each card should include the following information about the organism being studied: Scientific Name, Common Name, Classification: Phylum and Class, Natural Habitat, Diet, Structures for Locomotion, Special Adaptations. The other side of the card will be used for making a sketch of the observed organism.

Make Observations
  1. After the instructor has presented the lab prep, a signal will be given to begin work at your first station. Remember that you only have a limited time to observe the animals, answer the questions, and collect data.
  2. Fill in the species card for the specimen shown at this station. Do not forget to make a sketch of each animal on the back of its species card.
  3. In your journal, answer the questions posed by your instructor. Use whatever tools are available at that station to perform the suggested inquiry.

Why is the ability to "learn" an important adaptation for survival? Identify several examples in your local environment.
