Dr. Sylvia Earle, Host Researcher of Mission 3 of Operation: Resilient Planet, is one of the preeminent explorers and champions of Earth's oceans. As a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and former chief scientist with NOAA, her work has influenced policy makers around the world, including presidents, to protect ocean ecosystems.
Dr. Earle was born in New Jersey, but at the age of 12 moved to Clearwater, Florida with her family. Her parents always gave her the freedom to explore the world around her, but with a passion and respect for the animals and plants she encountered. After moving to Florida, she began her interest in water ecosystems and learned to dive at age 16 in a local river.
She earned a scholarship to attend Florida State University to study botany. She continued her education earning a Master's and Doctoral Degrees from Duke University.
Sylvia has explored every ocean and holds many world records for diving. She has logged over 6,000 hours of underwater research and exploration in over 60 separate expeditions. As her research and exploration took her to the depth of the oceans, she began to write books and produce television programs. She is credited with influencing the establishment of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands National Marine Sanctuary (Mission 4).
During her career, Sylvia has always advocated that each person can make a difference in protecting Earth's oceans. She told the Argonauts, "Kids sometimes get discouraged and they think they have no power to make changes, but that is simply not true. Your ideas, your words, your music, your actions can inspire those around you in ways that can have profound influence. Believe in yourself; use your power."
