Dr. Robert "Bob" Ballard, Chief Scientist for the JASON Project and Host Researcher for Mission 2 of Operation: Resilient Planet is a marine geologist and explorer. His interests range from marine archeology to the geology and ecology of deep sea vents.
Dr. Ballard was born in Kansas, but soon moved to San Diego where he lived on the ocean front. He was able to explore tidal pools and other marine ecosystems while enjoying many activities like swimming, diving, SCUBA diving and surfing. This experience gave him a permanent love of the seas. He also enjoyed reading and, to this day, his favorite book is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
He attended college at the University of California, Santa Barbara and graduated with degrees in chemistry and geology. But before finishing his college degrees, he was able to work with a group developing a submersible. Bob joined the ROTC program and was commissioned into the Army. But because of his marine sciences background he requested an assignment to the Navy and began work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI).
Bob continued his work at WHOI while earning a PhD in geophysics and geology at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography. He remained at Woods Hole for the next 30 years. While there Bob pioneered many new techniques for mapping the sea and discovering many new features on the sea floor.
Besides being JASON's Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Board of directors, Dr. Ballard is known for being the discoverer of the resting sites of the Titanic, Yorktown, Bismarck and President Kennedy’s PT-109.
Bob's current projects include underwater archeology and has recently led a research expedition to the Black Sea.
At every possible opportunity, Bob wants to share his passion, research and wisdom with students, encouraging them to challenge themselves by taking more math and science. He told the Argonauts on the Flower Garden Banks mission, "I always love going out into the field with our Argonauts. It's so refreshing to bring young minds into the field and to excite them. I know it happened for me when I was a little kid. I got to go on my first oceanographic expedition when I was in high school, and it changed my life forever."
