Striking the Earth What happens to sunlight when it arrives at Earth's atmosphere? About half of it is absorbed and reflected, and the other half makes it through to the surface of Earth. Find out how this light affects the atmosphere and produces our weather. |

 Clouds, air molecules, and particles (aerosols) reflect or absorb about half of the sunlight that reaches Earth’s atmosphere. The rest of the sunlight strikes the surface below. As light strikes Earth’s surface, things begin to heat up. Air just above the warmed surface absorbs some of the released infrared radiation. This transfer of heat from Earth’s surface to air energizes the atmosphere and produces our planet’s weather. This process is not uniformly spread around the globe. Landforms, bodies of water, vegetation, buildings, and roads influence the amount and the rate of heat absorption and transfer.
