Time required: 60 minutes
- Obtain a classroom set of materials necessary for Lab 4 as listed on page 62.
- Create a transparency of the weather map and its key shown on page 63 from the master that appears online.
- For the homework assignment, create a classroom set of copies Common Weather Sayings, an activity master in the Teacher Resources of JMC.
- Make sure all Internet connections are functional and access to the suggested URLs is not blocked by the local server.

Motivate |
|
|
|
Distribute an assortment of recent daily newspaper pages that include a colorful weather map. Have students compare and contrast the appearance of the maps. Discuss the similarities and differences in the graphics. Then compose a list of features that make weather maps effective communicators of atmospheric conditions. |

Teach |
|
|
|
- Discuss the role of a map key in interpreting weather maps. Have students consider the role of keys such as the one illustrated on page 63 in creating information rich maps.
- As required, facilitate students’ understanding of the printed weather map and discuss forecast strategies based upon the map content.
- To complete Make Observations, offer Internet access to individuals or groups of students. Remind students of their at-home responsibilities for this section.
- To help students select four locations, display a regional map. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of location selections across this map.

Reflect And Assess |
|
|
|
- Have students assess the use of the Internet in obtaining valid forecasts. Let them uncover, list and evaluate an assortment of URLs that present local, national, and global weather forecasts.
- Have students assume the role of weatherperson and compose and present a national forecast.

|
| Instructions: For homework, have students complete the Social Studies Connection: Weather Lore as described on page 63. As an extension, have students compare recent weather forecasts from different local resources as described in the Critical Thinking section on page 63. |
