Prepare

Prepare

Time Required: 180 minutes
  • Provide students with butcher paper or poster board to present their readings.
  • Gather all materials necessary for the stations you’ll have the students complete.
  • Make sure all internet connections are available.
Motivate

Motivate

Have students write a short reflection and then debrief and discuss about the town meeting or debate they had.
Teach

Teach

  • Divide your class into 5 groups. Assign each group to read one of the following sections: Tornado Preparedness, Thunderstorm Preparedness, Winter Storm Preparedness, Drought Preparedness, and Flood Preparedness. Be aware the Drought Preparedness is only 3 paragraphs long, so this section can be for a group who is challenged by reading, or combined with another section. It is helpful for an additional group to read all sections, if you have very fast readers. This group serves as the “Quality Control” group that is able to verify if the groups gathered all of the required information.
  • When all groups have finished reading, have them create a poster they will use to help present their information to the rest of the class. Supplement the presentations with a discussion facilitated by questions in the teacher’s edition and the web links provided on page 101. Make sure all students take notes on each section because they will be useful in completing the activities in the subsequent days.
  • Set up a series of sessions (60 minutes each) where each day the class completes a series of stations. Examples could include:
    • Tornado and Thunderstorm Day
      • Tornado Statistics connection on page 98 of the teacher’s edition
      • Group discussion about the Staying Informed extension on page 99
      • Critical Thinking activity on page 99
      • Storm Damage Reteach (as a poster or journal activity) on page 98
    • Winter Storm Day
      • Body Temperature Regulation connection on page 100
      • Wind Chill and Hypothermia extension on page 100
      • Insulation Properties reinforce activity on page 101
      • Frostbite connection on page 101
      • Teaching with Inquiry Activity on page 101
    • Drought and Flood Day
      • Heat Index extension (as web research) on page 102
      • Floods and Hygiene connection on page 103
      • Critical Thinking activity on page 103
      • Teaching with Inquiry activity on page 104
Reflect And Assess

Reflect and Assess

Assess using the natural products generated from the station activities. Additional anecdotal understanding can come from class discussion.
Follow-up

Follow Up

  • As a follow-up assign the students to create a preparedness kit for a weather event that would occur in your region.
  • As an extension, have the students read and discuss the literature connection found on page 102.
