Prepare

Prepare

Time Required: 240 minutes
  • Obtain the Mission 5 Briefing Video. Check your playback system.
  • Obtain transparency of Structure of a Tropical Cyclone first introduced in Mission 4.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Saffir-Simpson Scale on page 89.
  • Find images of different shapes and designs of parachutes.
  • Students will need fabric , kite string, washers, tape, and scissors.
  • Make sure all Internet connections are functional.
Motivate

Motivate

  • Have students report their findings for the Critical Thinking challenge from Lesson 1. Keep a running list on the board of students’ ideas and actions.
  • Have students rank the three most important actions to prepare for a natural disaster.
Teach

Mission Briefing 5: The Recovery Video

View Discover how you can prepare yourself and your home for the devastating effects of hurricanes and other storm events. Meet scientist Shirley Murillo and learn how she collects wind and storm data that help meteorologists warn communities of hurricanes and other storm events.

Living With Monster Storms Mission Briefing Article

View Read about scientist Shirley Murillo's work as a Research Meteorologist for NOAA and find out how her interest in hurricanes developed.

The Hazards of Hurricanes Mission Briefing Article

View Read about how scientists are able to anticipate the behavior of hurricanes using modern storm-tracking technology. Learn about some of the tools used by forecasters, how hurricanes can cause dangerous flooding, and other threats these storms can bring.

Risk Assessment Laboratory

View In this lab, you will decide how coastal communities can best prepare for the impact of monster storms by analyzing hurricane risk assessment data. You will also examine recent hurricane activity data and then make emergency response, financial, and emergency supply decisions.

Risk Assessment Data Sheet Laboratory

View To go with Mission 5, Lab 1.

Mission 5 Lab 1: Risk Assessment Journal Question

How do human activities, such as land use and urban growth, factor into the damage that can result from a monster storm?

Storm Surge Laboratory

View Explore how buildings can be constructed to better withstand the effects of hurricanes, including high winds and storm surges, in this lab. Build a city model and try to protect it from an incoming storm surge while minimizing loss of life and property damage.

Storm Surge Data Sheet Laboratory

Mission 5 Lab 2: Storm Surge! Journal Question

Describe some of the conditions that limit a city’s ability to prepare for storm surge. Why are these conditions limiting?

Additional Challenge

For those students who would like an additional challenge, assign them the Space Science Connection on page 88 of the teacher’s edition and prepare a poster showing their comparisons to the class.
Reflect And Assess

Reflect and Assess

For an assessment, you can grade any of the activities the students generated. Additionally, the Journal Questions in the student edition on page 92 and in the teacher’s edition on page 92 can be used.
