Many challenges remain in understanding and forecasting tornadoes. Here are some questions yet to be answered:

  • Photograph of a tornado in Cheyenne, Wyoming

The most devastating tornado in Wyoming history tore through a Cheyenne trailer park on July 16, 1979.
Why do some severe thunderstorms produce tornadoes while others do not?
  • What is happening inside a storm the instant a tornado starts to form?
  • Most tornadoes last for only a few minutes. Why do some last for more than an hour?

Scientists continue to explore these weather events. From the collected data, they design laboratory experiments and computer models to better understand monster weather. Yet, even with all this effort, it’s not possible with today’s science to predict precisely when or where a tornado will strike. That’s why the work of Tim Samaras is so important. Perhaps his probes will record the elusive clues that will help unlock the answers to these questions.
