Time Required: 60 minutes
  • Gather the materials listed on page 18 for each individual student.
  • Review the Teaching Tips, Lab Prep, and Make Observations sections on page 18 of the teacher’s edition.
  • Consider the appropriate location for conducting this lab. If your classroom doesn’t have several sinks, consider doing the activity outside.
  • Make copies of the Lab 2 Data sheet from the JASON Mission Center for each student.

  • Remind students of their experiences during the last lengthy lab. Ask students to recall how the barometer measured the change in air pressure.
  • Review the JASON Journal prompt from page 17 of the student edition. Invite students to speculate on how and why a decrease in pressure would affect athletic performance.
  • Tell students that this lab will give them a clearer idea of how pressure affects all objects.

  • Instruct students to read Pushing up with Pressure on page 18 of the student edition. Ask students to give examples of the strength of air pressure.
  • Have students read and complete the Lab Prep questions. Have a short discussion of the answers they provide.
  • Ask students to read the procedure outlined in the Make Observations section on page 18.
  • Distribute materials and watch for errors or misconceptions as outlined in the Teacher Tips on page 18 of the teacher’s edition.
