house being raised to protect it from hurricane damage

This house is being raised 3.4 m (11 ft) to minimize further flood damage from hurricanes.
Suppose you were told that your home could lose electricity for a day. What would you do? You might make a list of your home’s electrical appliances and devices and consider the consequences of each one’s being without power for 24 hours. Is the operation of any particular item essential to maintaining your home or your ability to remain in that space? If so, does it have a battery or generator backup? Would a temporary shutdown create any hazardous situation? After considering questions like these, you’d need to decide on a plan of action. Doing so would prepare you to deal with the situation as best you could. That’s what being prepared is all about.

Preparedness is also essential in the effort to protect lives and property from the rage of a monster storm and its aftermath. Before the storm strikes, you need to consider seriously the impact of its arrival. How should you deal with the danger that it poses?

Although each storm is different, certain strategies apply to almost every situation. These preparedness strategies are presented in the pages that follow.
