Birth of a Hurricane Web Link
 
Instructions:
  • Watch the NASA video "Birth of a Hurricane" and listen to the podcast featuring Jason Dunion and Robbie Hood where they discuss their work.

Teach
 
  • Show the students the transparencies of the three types of satellite images found in the teacher resources on JMC and discuss how they are similar and different, and how each one is useful.
  • When students understand the differences, have them use the online resources on page 80 to complete the teaching with inquiry activity found on that page. Have students discuss their findings.
  • As an additional activity or extension, have students use the websites on page 81 to research Hurricane Hunter aircraft. Suggest that students evaluate what they find and suggest improvements to the current models.

  • Create a web titled "Tracking Hurricanes." As you read pages 80-81, fill in your web with details about the methods scientists use to track hurricanes.
