  • Download and copy concept maps from the JASON Mission Center.
  • Download and copy the post-test with answer key.
  • Review the Mission at a Glance table that appears at the front of this Mission in the TE. Gather appropriate resources for after instruction, which include Reteach & Reinforce items as well as Extensions & Connections.

  • Have the students create a new concept map like the one they created at the beginning of the mission to show what they now know about rocks and minerals.
  • A brief overview of concept mapping is found online in the JASON Mission Center. Graphic organizers have been provided for you to use to complete the concept maps, or just use regular paper.

  • Administer the Post-test for Mission 1, either using the PDF format found in Teacher Resources online or using the resources in the Assessment Center.
  • Pass back the concept maps students created at the beginning of the Mission and have students compare them with the concept map they created at the beginning of this lesson. Invite students to share the new insights they have learned during Mission 1.
  • Read and discuss the Connection Article The Chemistry of Diamonds on pages 35 and 35 of the SE, using the warm up and discussion questions provided in the TE. Have students complete the Your Turn activity.

The Chemistry of Diamonds Interdisciplinary Connection
 
View This interdisciplinary connection article describes the chemical and physical properties of diamonds and how they differ from other allotropes of carbon. The article also discusses impurities and how knowledge of crystal structure is important in cutting diamonds. Students are asked to research allotropes of carbon.

  • An answer key to the Post-test has been provided online.
  • Have students share what they’ve learned about Mission 1 online in the student message boards.
  • Compare student’s concept maps from the beginning and end of the Mission to assess what they have learned.

  • Students can complete any Extension or Connect activities that they were not able to complete during the lessons.
  • Make the digital labs for this Mission available to students for review and extension even after the Mission is complete.
